Khattar has no political understanding; Actually Darbara Singh, Badal, Bhajan Lal and Comrade Surjit entangled Punjab-Haryana water issue: Rajinder Singh Badheri

“If these leaders had not stabbed Punjab in the back, the events of 1984 might not have happened.”

Tejal Gyan Chandigarh:
Prominent Sikh farmer leader, National Delegate of All India Jatt Mahasabha and President of Chandigarh unit S. Rajinder Singh Badheri has said that the statement of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar shows his lack of political understanding. Mr. Badheri said that in fact, when the water dispute between Punjab and Haryana was at its peak, Khattar was then actually just an RSS volunteer and had been running his own vegetable shop.

It may be recalled here that on the occasion of completion of 600 days of his government in Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar had said that his State needed the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) but Punjab entangled the whole matter. “Punjab should give up its stubbornness and implement the decision of the Supreme Court in favor of Haryana.”

Farmer leader S. Badheri said that the main burning issues of Punjab related to Sutlej-Yamuna link canal, river waters dispute and Punjabi speaking areas were in fact entangled by former Chief Minister of Punjab Darbara Singh, Parkash Singh Badal, then Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal and CPI (M). Central leaders like Comrade Harkishan Singh Surjit. Mr. Badheri said that Manohar Lal Khattar is not aware of such facts.

Mr. Badheri said that in 1982, the when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was resolving the issue, then the Shiromani Akali Dal was also ready over that. Sardar Ravi Inder Singh from Shiromani Akali Dal and Capt. Amarinder Singh from Congress had played a leading role in resolving the issue but Harkishan Singh Surjit, Parkash Singh Badal and others had entangled the issue only for their political gains. The loss was borne only by Punjab and the people of Punjab. Harkishan Singh Surjit, a member of the CPM Politburo at the time, used to say,”I am the central leader and I have not to look after the interests of Punjab only, rather I have to look after everyone.” It would not be an exaggeration to say that Surjit stabbed Punjab in the back.

Only then did the Punjab problem get complicated. Punjab police slaughtered 40,000 youths. If Indira Gandhi had solved this problem in 1982, the unfortunate events of 1984 might also not have happened.
